This is the event schedule for Penguicon 7.0 in 2009. The schedule is not complete yet but as we start to fill it in the info contained within it will be available here.

At the convention, you will pick up several items with your registration badge:

  2. An Errata Sheet will tell you the latest information about what's wrong in the Schedule Book (which is already done printing).

Pay particular attention to the Master Wall Schedule: that's a wall coated with sheets of paper representing the events, laid out in a table of rooms and times, reflecting all the latest corrections.

Munchkin Alex Yeager 5/1/2009 16:00 2h Loungeside 2 Gaming
"Kill the monsters - Steal the treasure - Stab your buddy." Munchkin is a stand-alone card game designed by Steve Jackson that "simulates" (well, sorta) a fantasy-themed RPG (oh, OK, DnD) in a simple, card-based game that's chock full o' silliness. Everyone begins the game as a 1st level Human with NO Class (heh-heh) and via cards, they acquire Races (Elf, Dwarf, etc.), Classes (Thief, Wizard, Cleric, etc.), Items, Armor, Potions and more that they use to combat hideous monsters like the 4th level Undead Ho

Windell Oskay of Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories will demonstrate Candyfab, a home-built, do-it-yourself, computer-controlled, 3D printer that uses granulated sugar as the printing medium. To begin, it "prints" a 2D design into a flat bed of sugar by selectively fusing the sugar using hot air. It has a low-cost desig

We Didn't Playtest This At All Angela Barry 5/1/2009 18:00 0h50 Loungeside 3 Gaming
The most aptly named game ever! In this exceptionally silly and awesome game, your objective is to win! Simple enough. Sadly, all of your opponents have the same simple goal, and they're trying to make you lose. Between Rock Paper Scissors battles, being eaten by a random Dragon, or saved by a Kitten Ambush, there are many hazards to avoid. Games last between 30 seconds and 5 minutes, and are lots of fun. Any number can play, though we recommend between 2 and 15. 20 people played at the same time in several games at Otakon! If anyone has pictures, let us know.

Through careful placement of your "boys", you control important locations throughout the city. But time is limited! Only three days remain for you to exert influence in the neighborhoods. Use

6 - 8 players. They are the blood-drinking creatures of the night. Horrors born of darkness, whose sole purpose in life -- unlife, actually -- is to satisfy their unholy thirst for the blood of the living. Without doubt vampires are monsters. Monsters need not always be unthinking, unfeeling terrors empty of remorse or even compassion or other human traits. Indeed, vampires can exceed their deathless curse, themselves becoming antiheroes or even heroes. But some vampires remain monsters. In Vampire: The Requiem you play supernatural creatures of the night with dark powers. An elaborate hidden social/political structure and an unquenchable thirst for blood.

Where'd My Files Go? A Guide to Modern Ubuntu Distributions Kyle Rankin 5/1/2009 20:00 0h50 Discovery Tech

That you can't loopback-mount the initrd? In this talk Kyle discusses the changes Ubuntu is making to what we might consider the traditional Linux system. There's a little something for everyone in the talk. For Linux newbies who are curious about what's under the hood Kyle covers the traditional and modern boot process including how init works followed up by a guide to where important files are in Ubuntu. For the experienced Linux user Kyle will show you how (and why) things have changed and where you can look now when you want to, for instance, change the default runlevel on an Ubuntu system.

Why Nuclear Needs to Be the Cool Thing to Do Doug Houseman 5/1/2009 21:00 0h50 Loungeside 5
When we look at global climate change and renewable energy, there is a huge gap in what can be delivered. It is not that the sun and wind do not provide enough energy -- it is that the energy is variable. This means that in the US using a typical year we will have several hundred hours with little or no power and would have to build 3 to 4 times the amount of wind and solar generation that would be needed on a peak production day to try to fill in the gaps. Most people do not like the idea of having no energy for days at a time. The global movement to clean energy wants to stop the use of natural gas for heating by 2030. I don't know about you, but I don't want to spend a weekend with no heat and no light in the middle of a Michigan winter. There are issues with nuclear power, but most of the major issues we read about are political in nature, not scientific. Let's talk realistically about why nuclear power needs to be a piece of our energy portfolio.
Neural Networks for the Non-Technical: Part 1 Dr. Stanley C. Mortel 5/1/2009 21:00 0h50 Ballroom 5/6 Tech
Heard about neural networks? Not sure what they are or how they work? Or why? This presentation will provide a thoroughly non-technical (no math) introduction to this fascinating topic. A very basic type of neural network will be presented, and the functional aspects will be related back to human perception and cognition. The goal is to provide the attendee with a sense of what a neural network is, how and why it works, and how it differs from the type of computer we are familiar with. The intended audience includes science fiction writers, inquisitive non-engineers, and anyone who would like a basic, conceptual understanding of neural networks.

Why is Free Software Like a Player Piano? Jon "maddog" Hall 5/2/2009 17:00 0h50 Discovery Tech
When maddog started programming, computers had lights and switches to help him know what they were doing and helping to control what they did.  In fact, maddog just narrowly escaped having a career turning the crank for Babbage's Difference Engine.... As time went on the lights and switches disappeared, and maddog went into withdrawal...until he discovered mechanical clocks and player pianos.  The ability to see all of the interrelationships at one time was soothing to his nerves. Bringing together his love of automation and music, maddog investigated the correlation between player pianos, player reed organs, and automated devices and prepared this brief talk, which is illustrated by elements of his own collection, complete as a multimedia presentation never to be equaled!  [Note: Due to fire marshal regulations, the normal pyrotechnic display will not be featured.] Warning:  Those people who are interested in historical accuracy in presentations should probably not attend.  Those interested in hysterical inaccuracy are welcome.

This game is a thematic sequel to Give Me The Brain!. It takes place at the same restaurant, has the same cast of characters, and requires roughly the same equipment. But the game is entirely different. Players choose orders (sometimes randomly, sometime not) from the figuratively colorful Friedey's menu, and try to fill them with cards from their hands. Some orders are easy, like the Cowabunga. One Cow Meat, one Bun. Some are a little harder, like the Chickabunga Conga: same as a Chickabunga (Bird Meat plus Bun), plus Fries and a Drink. Sound easy? Now try your hand at a Lord of the Fries, a Meat Munch, or the infamous Patriarch (Fish Meat, Cheese, Bun, Fries, Drink, and the oft-maligned Strawberry Pie).

It will feature a map of Germany, designed by Michale Menzel, and some slightly simplified rules. You will be able to build city landmarks as for example the 'Brandenburger Tor' or the 'Dresdner Dom' in one of the 12 possible cities. All these landmarks will be in the box as plastic miniatures of significant detail. In the magazines you read about solar cells -- photovoltaics that generate electricity. The typical installation for a Michigan home to zero the electric bill would be about 8 KW of solar cells or about $120,000. Most of us cannot afford this kind of investment. But for a few hundred dollars we can cut the energy consumption of an average home by 20 percent or more. Lets go beyond light bulbs and talk about where you should invest in energy savings and what your return on investment in Michigan would be.

The PCs will be grim, dark, angsty 80s anti-heroes, desperately trying to stop the Care Bears from brainwashing people into being happy again. This is a very tongue in cheek game, here for you to play the Punisher if he were a vampire/werewolf hybrid and carried katanas. Original characters will be provided, but you are welcome to customize them. The mechanics are quick to learn and new players are welcome. May 2, 2009 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm 3h50 Gaming
